Candi Tebing Tegallinggah is located in Bedulu Village, Gianyar Regency, Bali. The temple sits dramatically on the limestone cliffs above the Pakerisan River, creating a powerful blend of natural beauty and sacred energy. The surrounding jungle, river sounds, and ancient carvings make it a perfect place for both spiritual reflection and cultural exploration.
For historic background, research suggests it was built in the 12th century, during the era of the Bedahulu Kingdom, under the influence of the revered Hindu priest Mpu Kuturan, who helped establish Hinduism in Bali. It was likely served as a monastic or educational site for Hindu priests and spiritual aspirants. The meditation chambers carved into the cliff resemble hermitages (pertapaan), where priests or students would meditate, study sacred texts, and perform ascetic practices. Today, this site is recognized as an official cultural heritage site (Cagar Budaya) due to its historical and architectural significance.
The tour consists of several phases. First, we change into traditional attire. Secondly, we walk down 200 steps, while activating our senses. The birds chirping, river flowing, morning sunlight shining through the trees, breeze blowing… Immersing into nature always activate all five senses. Thirdly, once we arrive at the temple, we are greeted with the Great Gate (Candi Bentar). As this site was built 9 centuries ago, the gate had a sacred atmosphere with moss and cracks. Next were the 4 meditation chambers. From this chamber, we can imagine how this was a monastic site for Hindu priests. Finally, was the fountain (pancoran) where we purified in 4 fountains. The priest blessed us with the final prayers.
Feedback
- The purification was simpler and breif comparing to Taman Beji Samuan, which makes it easier for tourists to join.
- The view from the cliff was very scenic and nice.
- One of the steps collapsed during the inspection. Safety inspection might be needed.
- Walking on the cliff to the temple was a bit scary because the drop was right beside me. Might need a guide to assure safety.
