Outside Tourism Experience
Immerse yourself in Tukadaya Village, where every family member preserves a unique craft, from Ulon knitting to rhythmic bamboo melodies.
"Step into a home where art is not just created, but lived. In Jembrana Regency, an entire family dedicates their lives to preserving the intricate crafts of their ancestors."
Your journey begins in Tukadaya Village at the welcoming home of Mangde and his remarkable family. Here, every generation contributes to an atmosphere rich in music, woodcarving, and traditional daily life.
Start the morning with a peaceful walk around the compound. You will see firsthand the genuine simplicity of Balinese village life—strolling past their family garden, the grazing cows, the lush rice paddies, and the whispering bamboo grove that provides the raw materials for their art. It is a deeply grounding experience connecting you to the heart of the island.
Next, the visit takes an earthy, hands-on turn as you step into the red brick workshop managed by Mangde's father. The red bricks of Bali form the foundational aesthetic of its temples and homes.
You are invited to not just watch, but to literally wrap your hands in clay and mud. Feel the cool earth as you try shaping a brick by hand, learning the age-old, physical process of firing them in the traditional brick kilns. It is a tactile, deeply rewarding experience that connects you to the very foundational elements of Balinese architecture.
"To build a temple, you must first understand the mud. The strength of our culture begins in the hands of the brickmaker."
As you clean the clay from your hands, Mangde's mother introduces you to the delicate art of Ulon fabric knitting. This rare woven cloth is essential for decorating shrines during ceremonies, often depicting grand epics like the Mahabaratha or Ramayana. You will have a chance to practice weaving these stories into the fabric yourself.
While weaving, the air fills with the hypnotic, hollow resonance of bamboo. Watch Mangde masterfully play the traditional flute and Rindik instruments, and join him in creating melodies. Finally, gather around the family hearth where food is cooked over firewood to enjoy a heartwarming, communal Balinese lunch, celebrating a day of profound generational art.
Essential information to prepare for your hands-on artistic journey.
Note: Brick-making guarantees you will work heavily with clay. Firewood is the primary cooking method used, depending on weather.
