Overview

About this journey

Journey through the cultural heart of East Bali, where history, creativity, community, and nature come together in one meaningful experience. Begin in Klungkung by discovering the legacy of the Klungkung Kingdom at Kertagosa, exploring the vibrant local market, and experiencing the living tradition of Balinese painting in Kamasan through a hands-on creative workshop.

The journey continues to Besan Village, where the philosophy of Nyegara Gunung —the sacred connection between the mountains and the sea—guides you through community life, local wisdom, and Balinese spirituality. Walk through the village with the local community, meet the village elder and forest protector, take part in a sacred planting ritual, and pause for reflection at Tirta Mas Hill. From the mountain, follow the journey towards the coast to discover traditional coconut sugar and salt-making practices, meet local farmers and fishermen, and reflect on the deep relationship between the Balinese community, nature, and the sea.

Why we built it this way

Klungkung was the seat of Bali’s highest king, and Kamasan is where the classical painting style was born. You paint in that style with the people who still practise it. Day two follows Nyegara Gunung, the Balinese idea that mountain and sea are one, from a highland village down to the shore.
